Hialuronic Acid (HLA) based fillers:
JUVÉDERM®, RESTYLANE®, PERLANE®

HLA-based fillers are injectable clear gels that gently reverse many signs of aging in the face, including facial lines and wrinkles and loosening skin. They can also "plump up" the lips, sculpt the cheeks, and restore a youthful oval shape to the face.

Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the body that works with collagen and elastin to give volume and support to the skin.

The difference between various types of HLA-based fillers is the size of the hialuronic acid particles and how tightly these particles are bonded together. Fillers with larger particles (like Perlane) do a better job of filling deep lines, while fillers with smaller particles (Juvederm and Restylane) are better in correcting fine lines and wrinkles.

Because HLA-based fillers are non-animal-based and highly biocompatible, no pre-treatment allergy testing is needed.

Treatment with HLA-based fillers usually lasts less than a half hour, and patients experience very little to no discomfort because of the smooth consistency of the gel.

Topical numbing cream can be used to decrease the discomfort; some filler formulations can either be mixed or already come pre-mixed with Lidocaine anesthetic.

The results last about 10-12 months; optimal correction at the time of initial treatment is recommended.

Treatment side effects are usually mild to moderate, lasting 7 days or less, and include temporary injection-site reactions such as redness, pain, firmness, swelling, and rarely bumps.
