This gentleman underwent complete resection of left parotid (salivary) gland for the diagnosis of cancer, which required resection of his left facial nerve as well. After his parotid surgery the patient was unable to close his left eye and to move left side of the face. Subsequently, he underwent left facial reanimation surgery during which a gold weight was inserted into his upper eyelid to help with eye closure; his temple (temporalis) muscle was also swung down to the lip and check to help with symmetry and smile. The movement of this muscle can be appreciated on the postoperative videos (better seen on the side-view video).
This lady had a long-standing left facial paralysis causing problems with left eye closure, left lower eyelid weakness (ectropion) and a significant facial asymmetry. She underwent left upper eyelid gold weight placement which allowed her to be able to fully close the eye, left lower eyelid tightening, and left temporalis muscle transfer (i.e. borrowing a part of the temple muscle and bringing it down to the lip and the cheek). Postoperative photos and video show significant improvement in facial symmetry; patient is now able to fully close her left eye and to smile.
